This typo comes after reading an article in the Hindu. It has Great insight into the current educational system. But I guess a little late. It was about how today's children are educated to how to decipher letters and not connect the words. How mugging up a few lines and ultimately scoring good marks will make them call themselves educated.
But I feel the problem is much old. Today a graduate does not want more than a well paying job. The focus has shifted from obtaining education to getting jobs. Graduates (PGs for that matter) have started to focus on the returns of a degree than the fruits of education. When a wrong seed has been sown cant expect the right tree.
And as to the old system, You have talked about both the pre-british and british systems. In both of them although selective it was effective. In todays democracy, removal of the idea that education gives jobs(although it does), is the culprit. Education should improve the social status of the population not just the economic status . I dont think providing attractive text books or illustrative examples will change that. It could lead to a situation where the demand is more than the supply i.e If a child wants to read an attractive book where will it get more books from . Surely, in general, not every parent can afford it. The need for education should be generated inspite of results, entertainment, degrees .
Agreed that its a little ideological , but necessary goal. If we need to live in a house for a long time we have to make sure it has good foundations.
